Ladies Mile runs through the heart of The Downs in Bristol. The 440 acres of parkland is made up of the larger, 318 acre, Clifton Down (south of Stoke Road) and the smaller, 122 acre, Durdham Down (north of Stoke Road). Clifton Down is owned by the Merchant Venturers whilst Durdham Down is owned by Bristol City Council. An act of parliament in 1861 ensures that Durdham Down is free for anyone to use but it is only by grazing sheep there every five years that this absolute right is maintained. The next grazing is due to take place in 2020.
